VoIP Voice and Text Communication
If your carrier offers Wi-Fi Calling, you’ll be able to place and receive calls using your regular phone number. When this option is activated on your device, it connects to your home network via the internet using an eSIM data connection, effectively functioning as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).
This setup allows for calls and messages without incurring roaming charges or extra costs since everything is routed through your data connection.
WhatsApp and other apps tied to your phone number will seamlessly use the eSIM’s data connection, with no additional setup needed. Adding eSIMatrix eSIM won’t affect your WhatsApp number in any way.
Activating Wi-Fi Calling
To enable Wi-Fi Calling (VoIP) on your device, follow these instructions:
- Open your Settings.
- Navigate to Cellular.
- Ensure that your Default Voice Line is set to the Primary line (your usual phone number).
- Under Cellular Plans, choose Primary (your usual number).
- Confirm that Turn On This Line is enabled.
- Find the Wi-Fi Calling option and switch it ON.
- Verify that Data Roaming is toggled OFF.
Example
Go to Settings > Cellular, then select your Primary line. (On some devices, the Cellular section might be labeled as Mobile or Mobile Service.)
Using Wi-Fi Calling
Once Wi-Fi Calling is activated, your phone will use any available internet connection (eSIM data or Wi-Fi) to link to your home carrier’s network. You should see something like “Carrier Wi-Fi” displayed in the status bar, with “Carrier” representing the name of your mobile provider.
When connected, your Primary line will automatically receive calls and SMS messages over the eSIM’s internet connection.
If this option isn’t visible for your Primary plan, it likely means that your carrier doesn’t support it. The feature depends on your carrier and isn’t tied to the eSIM itself.
Local Phone Number
Please note that our eSIM plans do not include a local phone number, as they are data plans only.
Carrier Roaming Fees
Our eSIM data plans are designed to replace your local carrier’s roaming services and help avoid additional roaming fees. When your eSIM is properly installed, your local carrier generally won’t apply roaming charges.
- Roaming Data Fees: You won’t be charged for data roaming as long as your eSIM is set up correctly and Data Roaming is disabled on your regular phone plan.
- International Call Fees: Some carriers may still apply fees for international calls made over Wi-Fi calling with the eSIM data connection (although this is rare).
- International SMS Fees: Similarly, some carriers may charge for SMS messages sent using Wi-Fi calling with the eSIM data connection (also rare).
Please note that eSIMatrix doesn’t interact with your home carrier, so we have no influence over your existing plan. It’s always best to verify with your carrier if any roaming fees will apply when using Wi-Fi Calling internationally.
